THE ORIGINS OF THE ATHOLL BROSE NAME

Legend tells us the creation of the Atholl Brose is down to the Earl of Atholl, who used the drink’s deliciousness against his enemy. Upon finding it in a well, Lord of the Isles couldn’t resist a few cups worth leaving him too inebriated to see the capturers coming. Today the Atholl Brose is drunk among friends, often at Hogmanay or New Year’s Eve.

Atholl Brose Ingredients

60ml Ballantine’s 10 Year Old Whisky

45ml Oatmeal Water
3 teaspoons of honey
10ml Drambuie
10ml Single Cream

How We Make an Atholl Brose cocktail

Prepare oatmeal water by soaking 3 heaped tablespoons of oatmeal in half a mug of warm water. Stir and leave to stand for 15 mins. Strain
Stir 3 teaspoons of honey with 60ml of Ballantine’s whisky until the honey dissolves
Add 10ml Drambuie and 10ml single cream, shake with ice and fine strain into chilled glass

ATHOLL BROSE VARIATIONS

There’s been many variations of the Atholl Brose over the years from heating it to cooling it, adding milk versus cream and pouring in more whisky. If it works for you, it works. You can also add other ingredients to the classic Athroll Brose cocktail such as freshly grated nutmeg, cold brew coffee or a pinch of cinnamon.

The Atholl Brose is a traditional Scottish whisky cocktail that dates back to the 15th century, making it one of the world’s oldest drinks.

Some say it’s history is disputable. But the cocktail’s name is a bit of a giveaway. ‘Atholl’ being a large historical area of the Scottish Highlands and ‘brose’ the name of an uncooked porridge. Makes sense seeing as the cocktail’s key ingredient is oatmeal.
