SELF-MADE

1809

I WAS BORN IN BROUGHTONKNOWE, PEEBLESHIRE. SON OF A FARMER. I WAS POOR. OFTEN HUNGRY. BUT I HAD WHAT I NEEDED. A GOOD EDUCATION.

1822

I WAS 13 WHEN I MOVED TO EDINBURGH. I GOT AN APPRENTICESHIP IN THE OLD TOWN. IT GAVE ME A TRADE. A PLACE TO LIVE. AND AMBITION.

1827

WITH AN EXEMPLARY APPRENTICESHIP REPORT UNDER MY BELT, I WAS READY TO MAKE MY MARK IN BUSINESS. AT 18 I RENTED A SMALL GROCERY.

1831 AND 1836

MY SHOP DID WELL. VERY WELL. I MOVED TO BIGGER PREMISES. SPECIALISED IN WHISKY AND HAND-SELECTED MALTS. MADE A NAME FOR MYSELF.

1846

I HAD AN IDEA. IT CHANGED THE WAY BUSINESSES TRADED. I ADVERTISED DELIVERIES, BY TRAIN. CUSTOMER SERVICE AT ITS FINEST.

1858

BALLANTINE’S CONTINUED TO EXPAND. I CONTINUED TO CRAFT. WITH 2,000 GALLONS OF WHISKY IN STOCK, I BECAME A TRUSTED SUPPLIER.

1867

IN HONOUR OF MY ELDEST SON ARCHIBALD I OPENED MY FIRST “GEORGE BALLANTINE & SON” STORE IN EDINBURGH AND A SECOND IN GLASGOW.

1883

THE BUSINESSES WERE FLOURISHING. WHISKY SALES WERE ON THE INCREASE. I COULD NOW BOAST 20,000 GALLONS OF BLENDED STOCK IN BOND.

1891

At the age of 81 I entrusted my business to my sons. A year later I died. Gone but not forgotten. My perfectionism and drive live on.

1895

I POSTHUMOUSLY ACHIEVED ONE OF MY DREAMS WHEN BALLANTINE’S WAS AWARDED A ROYAL WARRANT BY QUEEN VICTORIA. HIGH PRAISE INDEED.

1910

MY PURSUIT OF PERFECTION CONTINUED TO BE RESPECTED BY MY DESCENDANTS. THE EVIDENCE - BALLANTINE’S FINEST. COMPLEX. ELEGANT. ICONIC.

1930

BALLANTINE’S “DEFINITIVE” 17 YEAR OLD AND “LEGENDARY” 30 YEAR OLD WHISKIES REDEFINED THE WHISKY MARKET. AS I HAD DONE.

1938

A HIGHLIGHT OF MINE. THE LORD LYON GRANTED US HERALDING ARMS. OUR SHIELD, THE BALLANTINE’S CREST, WAS A TRUE BADGE OF HONOUR.

1960

THIS WAS THE YEAR WE INTRODUCED BALLANTINE’S 12 YEAR OLD. THE COCKTAIL WHISKY THAT GOES BEYOND THE WHISKY STRAIGHT.

1993

MY LIFE’S AMBITIONS CULMINATED IN THE INTRODUCTION OF BALLANTINE’S 21 YEAR OLD. WITH ITS REFINED STYLE IT COMPLETED MY RANGE.

2006

SANDY HYSLOP BECAME ONLY THE 5TH MASTER BLENDER IN BALLANTINE’S 180 YEAR HISTORY. A CHIP OFF THE OLD BLOCK.

2011

JIM MURRAY KNOWS WHISKY. SO I WAS FILLED WITH IMMENSE PRIDE WHEN HE NAMED BALLANTINE’S 17 YEAR OLD HIS WORLD WHISKY OF THE YEAR.
