This carnival season in Brazil, Ballantine’s teamed up with Trippin and COMO VOCÊ (CMV) for a Pre carnival party to celebrate the bustling Grime movement and wider bass culture happening in Brazil. Part of Ballantine’s True Music initiative, the event provided an opportunity for the community to see local artists and hear international underground sounds in an environment that’s familiar and accessible.

Taking place on the rooftop of DUTO, a creative artspace in Madureira set up by local rapper and community figure Dughettu, the space has long served local and underserved communities in Rio’s north zone. The party saw some of the underground scene’s most exciting artists from Rio and São Paulo come together for one night. With MCs such as SD9, VND, MC Lizzie and Sodomita gracing the stage alongside rising and established DJs: Peroli, Akai, Ak1n & Juan.

Championing the Brazilian scene’s biggest boundary pushers in grime and bass culture, artist Ou Juca created the flyer with a nod to the Bate-Bola culture through the evil clown.

About Trippin:

Trippin is an independent platform that connects travel, culture and creativity like never before. Collaborating with their community to uncover stories that are found at the intersection of social and cultural boundaries. Combining travel guides and resources with podcasts, films and the written word to create an ecosystem that empowers people to travel more consciously.

As strong believers that music can unite cultures and drive systemic change, Trippin has produced events in the heart of Mexico City, secret parties in Glastonbury and takeovers at London’s iconic club Fabric. They use the dance floor to support emerging artists and showcase sounds from across the world.

Ultimately, it’s about championing global creativity, mapping underground scenes, unpicking cultural mosaics and connecting cultures worldwide – all through the eyes of locals.

COMO VOCÊ seeks to act as a conduit and bring artists closer together in collaboration through music, art and film with a focus on ensuring they are fairly paid and represented for their crafts and skills. COMO VOCÊ will offer new music projects in the form of collaborations between British and Brazilian artists, identifying and working with visual artists to produce filmed content, photography and design, live and digital events as well as community skill-swap programs.

CMV is the bridge that exists between Brazilian and British underground music and street culture, born out of the film created by Jesse Bernard for WeTransfer in 2022. It’s a movement aimed at serving a community of artists and creatives who sit somewhere along this spectrum. Since the film, CMV has curated and produced events in London, Lisbon, Porto, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
