Kid Fonque presents the True Music Sessions Podcast bringing artists together from all walks of life to explore how they navigate being an artist in South Africa. The podcast explores their successes, struggles and creative processes, making music born from passion not compromise.

Episode 9: Felix Laband

Pietermaritzburg-born and Cape Town-based Felix Laband has been killing the game, making tracks that jump, political remixes and soundbites that have been a part of a lot of artists’ musical journeys. His light, emotional, minimalist vibe combines several styles, and samples from classical, jazz and old television recordings with instrumental performances by himself and guest artists. A pioneer. A legend in the making. Daev Martian is testing new sounds, breaking new ground and generally pushing South African music to new heights. He’s showering SA with his sound – a futuristic and eclectic gathering of influences from jazz, to hip hop and electronic music. A consistent beat maker, he put his music out on the internet, opening his own doors. Episode 11: Beat Sampras

Comprised of David Migwalla and Dylan Fine, the duo formed out of what was supposed to be a once-off collaboration at CTEMF in 2016, and have been combining beats, R&B, soul and trap ever since. Together, they’ve evolved their sound and are bridging the gap between easy-listening and hard-hitting party music.

EPISODE 12: NONKU PHIRI

Effortlessly moving between house, electronica, RnB and kwaito, Nonku Phiri is carving a path for her most impactful musical journey to date. Discovered at the age of 17 courtesy of a serendipitous collaboration, Nonku Phiri has gone on to launch of her independent label, “Albino Black”, an EP and there’s so much more on the horizon. Durban-based Kususa’s take on afro-tech has gained this duo local and international attention, putting them on stage with Black Coffee in the clubs of Ibiza. Their claims to fame are numerous, remixed by the best and surging their career to new heights.
