Back in April we teamed up with Soho Radio for a five-day takeover in the heart of London to bring fans the best in global independent music. To celebrate the event, we also launched two grants for emerging independent radio stations and record stores to fund projects which open up their space in music culture to be more diverse and inclusive. Steam Radio are one of those winning recipients.
Steam Radio programming is primarily music based with a wide array of genres covered. Whether you’re after folk or drum and bass or heavy psych or samba, you’ll find the right show for you! The common thread across their schedule is a deep passion for music with a focus on incorporating elements of talk and wider discussion.
They also have a particular interest in promoting and preserving local history which they have been able to work on through their “History Of” series which has seen hosts cover areas including Women In Electronic Music, Voguing and Ballroom Culture as well as radio specials such as “A Drink For Len Johnson” which celebrated the life of the Black British boxer whose protest at The Old Abbey Taphouse led to the overturning of the colour bar across the UK.
Off air, Steam Radio provides a platform for a wide range of projects and events. By day these include workshops which aim to give underrepresented groups a route into the creative industries. By night they throw parties that prioritise community on the dancefloor and platforming a diverse range of artists, both brand new and established.
