EPISODE 1 CAPE TOWN: A RIGHT TO SHINE
Get under the skin of the hometown heroes of Cape Town’s DIY music scene with YoungstaCPT, K$, Dope Saint Jude, Aux Womdatso & DJ Lyle, as part of our True Music Africa tour with Boiler Room.
We kicked off the first of our True Music Africa shows in Cape Town on the 23rd of November. With headliners K-$, DJ Lyle, Youngsta CPT, Dope Saint Jude and Aux Womdantso playing everything from hip-shaking beats to sonically engineered-for-the-dancefloor bangers. Check out the highlights below:
Thulani Sam, better known as Aux Womdantso, from Nyanga East has captured the imagination of Gqom lovers across the country with his radio shows, mixes and live performances for over a decade. The humble DJ has brought the originally Durban-focussed intricate subculture to the forefront of Cape Town’s sound through such compilations as his now famous ‘Gqom Fridays’.
A mainstay on the South African hip-hop scene, DJ Lyle has been prominent as selector and event organiser for over 10 years. In that time, he has supported the likes of Wale and Talib Kweli and pushed the sounds of local Cape Town artists such as Cassper Nyovest and fellow guest YoungstaCPT
Dope Saint Jude
Cape Town Native Dope Saint Jude is well known both at home and abroad for her progressive take on rap music. She released 2015’s Keep In Touch with Angel Ho to wide acclaim and has continued to push the boundaries ever since. Her influences come from a variety of sources, being as inspired by hip-hop from both the US and UK as well as by classical music and punk, most notably the Riot Grrrl movement of the early 90s and the figurehead of the scene Kathleen Hanna.
K-$ is the alter-ego of Kalo Canterbury, a queer DJ, internet sensation and “all-round Daddy” hailing from Cape Town’s southern suburbs. Known for nostalgic, escapist sets at their LIT safe-space “paatis”, they play a mix of 70’s funk, disco and soul, inspired in large part by their parents’ apartheid-era house parties.
Wynberg emcee YoungstaCPT is well-established on Cape Town’s underground hip-hop scene. Having recorded his first song aged just 12 years old, he has gone on to release a total of 29 mixtapes, with Kaapstads Revenge and How To Make It In RSA as the most recent. With sights set on representing his hometown further afield, he has toured Europe and Australia, flying the flag for the “Kaapstad” sound.
