Spotlighting the most exciting young independent artists who live and breathe the entrepreneurial spirit that has defined the continent's underground music scene. We've hand-picked a line-up of key innovators of the booming music scene, demonstrating a commitment to creating their sound and style exactly how they want to, without compromise.




Accra: a city that has long been known for its exquisite riot of creative, experimental musicians and producers, is now getting a spotlight shone on its unique scene thanks to their influential West African sounds. Popular for their characteristic swagger-laden rhythms, up-tempo beats, joyful lyrics and all around good vibes, Ghana’s music is taking over radio waves and filling dance halls around the world.

Music that leans towards the frenetic but always playful, is the sound of innovation at its best. Artists are continually experimenting with different touch points of West Africa’s musical heritage to create new, unique flavours that thrive from the ground up.

LINE-UP

KWESI ARTHUR

Kwesi Arthur is a rap sensation hailing from Tema, Ghana. Whilst having a challenging childhood, Kwesi Arthur’s rap career had its stepping stone after listening to Drake’s ‘Thank Me Later’. In 2017 he caught listeners ears after dropping ‘Grind Day Remix’ featuring Sarkodie and Medikal, produced by Kayso. He has been rising fast ever since. Kwesi is one of the brains behind Ground Up Chale, a music video platform, record label, movement and, to him, more of a family.

LA MEME GANG

The hottest collective emerging from Ghana, La Meme Gang, is comprised of six members; Darkovibes, $pacely, RJZ, KiddBlack, KwakuBS and Nxwrth. With their debut EP "La Meme Tape” in 2017 churning out hits such as: ‘Yaa Baby’, ‘Godzilla’, and ‘MadOp’, and their latest project “Linksters” in 2018 blessing us with ‘Reveal (Fly You Out)’, ‘Stone Island’ and ‘Snakes’, La Meme Gang has managed to gain a dedicated fandom and play sell-out gigs, inspiring a new wave of urban music in Ghana

AMAARAE

Ghanaian born singer, songwriter, producer, sound engineer and DJ, Amaarae is a an emerging sensation whose sound is characterized by an eclectic blend of bold yet sexy lyricism and longing vulnerable melodies. The polarizing combination of uninhibited wordplay and Amaarae’s small yet alluring vocals are what makes this young woman so stark yet refreshing to listen to.

DJ MIC SMITH

Michael Owusu Smith, known as DJ Mic Smith, is the boss of Shutdown Empire, a record label bringing fresh and infectious Ghanaian sounds. The award-winning DJ hosts YFM's drive time show "The Dryve", he is a regular DJ at Accra’s Twist Night Club and the official tour DJ of Nigerian afrobeats star Mr. Eazi. Dj Mic Smith is also known for producing hit songs such as ‘Blessings’ featuring Mr. Eazi, ‘Yenkor’ featuring Kwesi Arthur and ‘Jama’ featuring Patoranking and Lil Shaker.

Vision DJ

Vision DJ, also known as Francis Essah Aboagye, was awarded ‘Discovery DJ of the Year’ in 2013. Since then he has quickly become a common name in the Ghanaian music scene, playing an eclectic range of music, including R&B, hip-hop, afro pop, hip life, dancehall and soca. He rocks the weekly morning drive with the boisterous Ms Naa on Y107.9FM’s Ryse ‘n Shyne. His famous ‘Loud ‘n Lyve’ mixes keep his listeners locked. As a producer, Vision DJ has collaborated with artists like with Mr Eazi, E.L, AI, King Promise, Kwesi Arthur and Medikal to drop dancefloor bangers.
