Forget everything that you think you know about Beirut. Beneath stereotypes of instability lies a thriving underground music scene. And it's been there for a long time just waiting to be discovered.
As we continue our mission of broadcasting exciting underground music to the world, we’re pairing some of the electronic music scene’s most original live acts with their more traditional, instrumental counterparts in this musically and culturally diverse city.
Leading the charge in Beirut will be Dutch innovator Dollkraut - whose unique style of lo-fi house and electro-disco defies categorization – who will collaborate with Zeid Hamdan. Zeid is the producer behind some of the most successful alternative Lebanese artists, and is a well-regarded singer/ songwriter in his own right. He’ll be bringing on board the romantic, ethereal vocals of Maii Waleed, a local rising star.
Also joining the True Music Hybrid Sounds Beirut line-up is locally based composer and producer Jad Taleb, Lebanese DJ 3lias, London-based house duo Chaos in the CBD, who have released on the celebrated Rhythm Section label. Last but by no means least, we have French electro-house doyenne Miss Kittin bringing her eclectic mix of Electroclash, techno and leftfield electronica.

If there’s one thing that Dollkraut can’t stand, it’s predictability. For the past decade, Pascal Pinkert has passionately pursued musical unpredictability. In the process, he’s earned a reputation for being a DJ and producer whose fuzzy, lo-ﬁ and analogue-rich approach giddily sidesteps conventions and proudly nestles in the cracks between genres. Eschewing narrow-mindedness while embracing experimental and DIY sounds, Pinkert is capable of sending danceﬂoors wild with records that few other DJs would dare to drop. While his focus remains ﬁrmly on records you can dance to, few would be able to second-guess his set-lists. This approach has resulted in a string of memorable DJ appearances at such iconic clubs and events as Rock En Seine in Paris, the Institut fur Die Zukunft in Leipzig, Tel Aviv’s Breakfast Club and Dekmantel Selectors festival in Tisno, Croatia. Fittingly, Pinkert also now hosts a regular Dollkraut show on Amsterdam institution Red Light Radio. As you’d expect, unpredictability is also at the heart of Pinkert’s musical productions. Since making his debut in 2009, the Dutchman has brought his distinctive, anything-goes style to a stellar list of labels, including Permanent Vacation, The Gym, Tape Records Amsterdam, Charlois and, most recently, Jennifer Cardini and Noura Labbani’s Dischi Autunno. Delve deep into his discography – and in particular his two albums, Schimanski’s Black Lullabies (The Gym, 2014) and Holy Ghost People (Dischi Autunno, 2017) and you’ll ﬁnd a dizzying range of hazy, otherworldly and mind-altering sounds. These mine the past for inspiration whilst offering a glimpse of an imagined future fraying at the seams. From muscular electronic disco, Morricone-inspired cinematic soundscapes and dub-ﬂecked krautrock workouts, to electro-ﬁred post-punk and wave, ghostly pop and freaky synthesizer explorations, Pinkert’s music surprises and thrills at every turn. Given this gleefully rough-round-the-edges eclecticism, the recent revelation that he is also the man behind Knekelhuis’s celebrated minimal wave project, De Ambassade, cannot have come as a shock. As for Pinkert’s future plans, you’ll just have to wait and see. If his career so far has taught us anything, he’ll most likely
ZEID HAMDAN & MAII
A one of a kind Arabic Indie Pop number from Alexandrian singer, songwriter and guitarist Maii Waleed and Lebanese underground producer Zeid Hamdan , from soapkills and Zeid and the Wings fame. Together they've created exquisite melodies, subtle beats and introspective lyrics. Maii sings the way she speaks, with a slang approach to romanticism, and never fails to use her imagination and witty sense of humour. Meanwhile Zeid’s skill and creativity production-wise and on the instruments remain apparent, merging perfectly with Maii’s ethereal energy without imposing on the day-dreamy aura that surrounds their collective product. This dynamic duo, who have been working with each other since 2010, have carefully crafted their sound making a unique to the Arab world album entitled Moga (Wave). Their music is smooth but interesting, sounding like mix of up tempo pop rock Bossa-Nova with an Arab flair. Hailing from Alexandria, Maii Waleed's vocals are soft spoken, adorable, and addictive. In 2017 with the release of their EP Ehdefni, this project is conquering the Arab world as the sound is unique to the region's musical landscape.
Grenoble born Caroline Hervé, aka Miss Kittin has over the past years become one of the most inspiring DJs and voices to emerge within the electronic music scene. Alongside long-time production partner The Hacker, tracks such as ‘Frank Sinatra’ and ‘1982’ propelled them into the spotlight, whilst further collaborations with fellow feline Felix Da Housecat’s ‘Silver Screen (Shower Scene)’ and ‘Madame Hollywood’, Golden Boy’s ‘Rippin Kittin’, Sven Väth ‘Je T’aime’, Steve Bug, Antonelli Electric and T.Raumschmiere to name but a few, have confirmed Miss Kittin’s star billing status. She released her debut solo artist album ‘I Com’ in 2004, that showed her spreading her wings with jacking Chicago House, distorted punk attitude, skanked-up Dub and Electronic Pop as the singles ‘Professional Distortion’, ‘Requiem For A Hit’ and ‘Happy Violentine’ so aptly displayed. From starting out in 1994, Kittin’s name first appeared on a flyer in the chill-out room for a rave in an old military fort in the mountains. From there on Kittin hasn’t looked back. From playing harder edged Techno, rave classics, Chicago, Acid and Detroit Techno Kittin has progressed into more leftfield, Electro and electronic realms.
Beirut born DJ and producer 3LIAS aka Elias Merheb, is undeniably one of the most signiﬁcant artists in the middle-east’s house and techno scene today, and one of its very ﬁrst pioneers, constantly pushing the boundaries since starting out in the late 90’s. His tenure at the infamous B018 where he was a resident and head of entertainment, ended a few months ago after a decade long collaboration that started back in 2006 but his mark on the club will forever be felt. 3LIAS plays a distinctive sound that doesn’t pursue trends. Techno, house, broken beats and ambient as well as jazz or funk are of equal importance in his craft and his extended trademark 8 hour sets are a striking assertion of his many inﬂuences. Sharing the decks every now an then with young locals has helped pave the way for a crop of homegrown artists to succeed at home and abroad. His shameless talent behind the turntables has propelled him onto some of the biggest stages, and dance-ﬂoors around the world such as Output (NY), Flash (DC) and Kater Blau (Berlin). Having studied electronic music production and audio engineering, the place where you’ll most likely ﬁnd him hiding today is his bee hive music studio where daily experiments between people from all over the musical spectrum and talking machines from analog synthesizers to drum machines to samplers to racks and virtual instruments have produced some of his best collaborations to date, such as his most recent “Bring it Back” alongside Ali Ajami released on John Digweed’s Bedrock label.
CHAOS IN THE CBD
Perhaps best known for their stratiﬁed, ear-catching rhythms, Chaos In The CBD is the house moniker of New Zealand brothers Ben and Louis Helliker-Hales. Though their music evokes the time-honoured heritage of classic house, their interpretation of jazz brings a unique inventiveness to the genre. In 2015, the duo released Midnight in Peckham on the South London dance party and record label Rhythm Section. The EPs poetic production and mournful horns (played by Isaac Aesili) seems to thaw the ice and grime of their new adopted home and embodies the borough’s thriving, vibrant music community. Early 2016 saw two releases with revered Japanese label Mule Musiq, further enhancing the pair’s ear for complex drum patterns that create visceral listening experiences. The brothers’ ceaseless momentum led to the start of their own label In Dust We Trust, a collaboration with childhood friend Jon Sable. The label’s ﬁrst offering, Accidental Meetings, exempliﬁes their considered production; energetic progressions that mature as the motifs develop. With ever-strengthening production credentials, and infectious, joyous rapport while performing, Chaos In The CBD have marked themselves as one of the most eminent underground house artists to emerge out of the South Paciﬁc. The pair split their time between the studio and performing around North America, Europe and the UK, as well as closer to their native home in New Zealand.
Jad Taleb is a Music producer, Film composer and DJ based in Beirut. He also works in video and ﬁne arts. Jad is the co-founder of Beirut based electro -rock group Flum project, with whom he released his debut album “Dormant” in 2015. He is also co-founder of Assault on structure, an audiovisual platform that supports Live electronic music and Hybrid art installations. In December 2016, he recorded and produced his ﬁrst solo EP “Transitory” at Riverside Studios Berlin, an early step in putting his music out there; it also granted him a small tour in 2017, mostly around Germany, France and Tunis. His current and ongoing plan focuses on analog signal processing, sound design and electro-arabic merging, generated throughout different genres, as various as, Techno, Electronica & Sound art.
