Meet the DJ’s, Artists and music-makers set to bring the house down in Moscow:
Derrick May is an electronic musician from Michigan, USA, aka Mayday and Rhythim is Rhythim. An only child born in Detroit, he began exploring electronic music early. Along with his Belleville, Michigan high school friends Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson, commonly known as the Belleville Three, May is credited with developing the futuristic variation on house music that would be dubbed "techno" by Atkins. Derrick May is one of the founding fathers of Detroit techno, a precursor of its many variants and particularly of acid house. May's aesthetic melancholy style gained him the nickname of "the Miles Davis of techno." He introduced both a psychological element and a futuristic vision in dance music. Over the last three decades, May has maintained a steady performance schedule, playing his own brand of “Hi-Tek Soul” to dance floors across the globe.
With few hard-copy releases to her name and a refreshing indifference to self-promotion, Or:la’s career has followed a different trajectory to most. Or:la's growing success as a dynamic producer and genre-spanning selector has, in 2017 alone, seen her gain a residency at the Warehouse Project in Manchester, a bi-monthly show on NTS Radio and win DJ Mag's 'Breakthrough DJ of the year’. Last summer she graced the Boiler Room decks at AVA Festival with what was one of the stand out sets of the year. We just couldn’t wait to have her back.
Under their respective artist names Truss and Tessela, brothers Tom and Ed Russell have forged formidable individual reputations as producers. Defining tracks such as Truss’ ‘Kymin Lea’ and ‘Beacon’ and Tessela’s ‘Rough 2’ and ‘Hackney Parrot’ for the likes of R&S, Perc Trax, and their own Poly Kicks label, have encapsulated so much of what is exciting and vital in UK underground, electronic music. Their new collaborative project Overmono, now sees Tom and Ed come together on record for the very first time.
As well as bringing their live show to Moscow for a special performance, Overmono are partnering up with local Russian artist XXX, fusing their live set up with more traditional acoustic sounds for the first track on our latest True Music EP.
Трип has been flying the flag for weird and wonderful club music since its inception, but Russian duo PTU's Alina Izolenta and Kamil Ea’s plunderphonic techno takes Nina Kraviz’s label to uncharted territory. Their recent release, ‘A Broken Clock is Right Twice A Day’ was charted as one FACT Magazine’s best 50 tracks of 2017, and there’s plenty more to come from this exciting male and female duo. PTU will be bringing their unique live show to our True Music stage in Moscow.
Guitarist, musician and composer, Pavel Dodonov has had an expansive career. Probably best known for his involvement in the band Dolphin, Dodonov has since gone on to release nine solo albums, as well as scoring several award winning film sound tracks in his native Russia. His live performance sees him warp the sounds of his beloved guitarfrom aggressive “wall of noise” to fine melodics and soft soundscapes.
Get ready to explore the intersection of electronic and acoustic music as True Music: Hybrid Sounds kicks off in Moscow with UK electronic duo OVERMONO and Russian saxophonist, Solo Operator.
